UTA has a student base that is second to none.  It is an honor for the Alumni Association's Scholarship Committee to award scholarships to such exceptional students.  The Association is constantly striving to increase our number of scholarships because we do have so many amazing students who could benefit.   The Scholarship Committee will be working as necessary to get these scholarships into deserving hands.  

This year's scholarships will include:

• Frankie Stewart Hansell Scholarship ($1,500):
  • Must be a student in good standing at UT-Arlington. Available to any major, undergraduate or graduate.
  • Demonstrated need, academic achievement, and a high degree of motivation toward a career goal are required.
  • The scholarship is renewable for up to three consecutive years if funds are available.
• Michael and Jennifer Cathcart Alumni Scholarship ($500):
  • Available to any student enrolled in a degree program at UT-Arlington at any level.
  • Eligible applicants must have demonstrated extra-curricular involvement in on-campus activities.
  • The scholarship is non-renewable;  both need and merit will be considered.
• UTA Alumni Association Board Scholarships Honoring Three Distinguished Named Alumni ($2000 each)
  • Available to any student enrolled in a degree program at UT-Arlington at any level. 
  • Eligible applicants should have demonstrated extra-curricular involvement in on-campus activities.
  • The scholarship is non-renewable; both need and merit will be considered.
  • Each named in honor of five Distinguished Alumni whose names are recommended by Deans from a rotating list of Colleges/Departments.
• SFC Eddie Martin, 49^th Armored "Lone Star" Division Scholarship ($500)
  • Available Scholarship honors the father of E. Dale Martin, President of the UTA Alumni Association.  Dale's dad died this past year and this scholarship is to honor a Fort Worth Soldier.
  • The scholarship is non-renewable; both need and merit will be considered.
  • Available to any Liberal Arts major with preference points given to ROTC students.      
  • The student shall demonstrate need, academic achievement, and a high degree of motivation toward a career goal.

Additional Information on the backgrounds of the Scholarships

The Frankie Hansell Trust Scholarship  

Frankie Stewart Hansell entered North Texas Agriculture College (now UTA) in 1932 after being Salutatorian of her class as Cooper High School.  She was 17 with $17 in her pocket.  Graduating in 1934 she subsequently taught for three years and earned a Bachelor's degree.  During her time in a "Miss Morgan" type of post with Bexar County, she met and married John Hansell.  Subsequently, Mrs. Hansell held positions with the City of New York and the U.S. government.  Finally, she rose to the international service level where she worked in India, Thailand, and Italy.  She spent approximately 20 years at that level before retiring to Arlington.  Mrs. Hansell's establishment of her endowment fund was to celebrate the lives of her family and friends who contributed to the richness and joy in her own life.  She believed that ambitious and intelligent young people should receive maximum encouragement and support to develop their potential.  She hoped, therefore, that the scholarship would attract highly motivated scholars and help them achieve their goals.

The Vanguard Scholarship

Eligible applicants should demonstrate involvement and leadership in addressing specific issues that vary each year.  The scholarship is non-renewable; both merit and need will be considered.  This scholarship has been provided courtesy of Paramita Bandyopadhyay and Bhaskar DasGupta. 

Sergeant Martin's Scholarship

SFC Eddie Martin served in the Texas National Guard through the 1950's.  His Heavy Tank Battalion was known for their battle-readiness and sheer toughness.  They were present during some of the Tumbler-Jangler above-ground H-bomb tests and marched through the fallout to prove it would not be detrimental to their ability to fight.  As a senior in high school he decided to drive his Walker-Buldog light tank to Technical High (now JP Elder Middle School) to drum up interest in the ROTC and early age signups for the Guard.
